HYDROPONICS (SOIL-LESS FARMING)
Hydroponics is the technique of growing selected plants and vegetables without soil. Water is used to replace soil. Though it is an old technique that can be traced back to the days of the hanging gardens of Babylon (one of the 7 wonders of the world which dates back to around 2,600 years ago). Hydroponics is a combination of two Greek words “Hydro”– which means WATER and “Ponics”– which means WORK, so hydroponics can also be called water-works. Dr W. F. Gerickle of the university of California was the first to come up with the term in 1936.
Hydroponics has proven to be of great success with mostly vegetables and the following crops: tomatoes, pepper, livestock fodder, lettuce, cabbage, cucumber etc
Hydroponics farming is best cultivated under a under a controlled environment (green house system)
Requirement for hydroponics
1. green house
2. Water (pH between 4.5-5.5)
3. Nutrient solution
4. Seed
5. pH meter
6. Substrate
Advantages of hydroponics
1. More product in less time.
2. Possibility of growing more densely.
3. Product are more resistant to diseases.
4. Cleaner and fresher products are produced.
5. It makes agriculture and farming more interesting for the younger generation.
6. It requires little running cost.
Disadvantages
